The Hertfordshire Horn Modification
|
Incredibly, this
enhancement was
discovered completely by
accident.
It is not recommended for every instrument, but can transform the
performance of those which blow too freely at a low dynamic level.
By placing a restriction at exactly the right point in the final bell
section, the tone in pianissimo is dramatically improved and quiet note
production becomes significantly easier.

|
Theory
Subsequent research has
shown that the exact placement of the constriction is critical:

(where t = original tone and
t¹
= new tone)
For this reason,
the circumstances applying to the original
modification are rigorously copied.
As this has to be
preceded by a Trans-Atlantic flight, the procedure is
not cheap.

|
Cosmetic
To complete the
process, a special tape, obtained by us from the
aerospace industry, where it is used on the Stealth Bomber, is applied
to the modification.
Its remarkable
reflective properties almost completely disguise the
deliberate restriction.
Thus your
colleagues, marvel as they might at your new found
hyper-technique, will never know your secret.

Other Instruments

A Cornet undergoes
modification in our workshop where the special cosmetic shielding
tape will be
applied, thus completely disguising the amazing
'Techno-Dent'..

Warning:
Brass
instrument repairers in the provinces and even some on the extreme
outskirts of the Jubilee Line may well be unaware of the developments
in Duffchops cutting-edge modification technology. When leaving an
instrument with them for repairs, it is important, therefore, to draw
their attention to the fact that your enhancement is deliberate,
otherwise they may well de-maximize your instrument by taking out the
precious techno-dent (if they can see it).
