  The idea of the "Great Conductor" is a myth put about by record companies, concert promoters and orchestral managements, and believed by some amateur musicians, concert goers, orchestral managements and the conductors themselves.

 It must be said, however, that every musician can usually remember having worked with a conductor who stood out as being head and shoulders above the rest of the field in terms of musicianship, technique and communications skills. This is certainly true in my case, although I am, sadly, unable to remember his name.
